In the
northwestern desert of Rajasthan, India, about 100 miles from the border
with Pakistan, there is a "small town" (in Indian terms) of half a million
people called Bikaner. It is not completely isolated from the modern
world, but there is no airport, and travel to and from Bikaner is by
train, car, or camel. This relative isolation has allowed the practice of
North Indian classical music and dance to remain more intact and less
influenced by the West and by Bollywood than in many other areas.
There are some incredible musicians in Bikaner. The goal of the Bikaner
Music Project is to preserve their work, bring it to the outside world,
and to produce a documentary that will help those who are unfamiliar
with North Indian classical music to understand and appreciate it.
